Thanatology is the science of death, dying, and grief. Thanatologists study the intricacies of the social, psychological, physical, and spiritual needs of those who are dying and the people who love them.
End-of-Life Doulas can provide emotional and spiritual care at the end of life. Death Doulas are able to bring comfort and calm to the process of dying by demystifying and normalizing death. There is currently no centralized oversight or certification for End-of-Life Doulas, which is part of the reason why Delaney sought to earn a Master of Science Degree in Thanatology to ensure the highest level of science-based knowledge about death, dying, and grief.
Grief is our internal response to loss. Grieving is what we do with our grief. For too long, grief has been feared and pathologized instead of being embraced and understood as a universal human experience. Having a companion who is knowledgeable about the expected presentations of grief, the neuroscience of grief, and the history of grief theories that form the basis of grief counseling won't take away the pain, but can offer a normalization and reassurance that you don't have to go through your grief journey alone and confused.
Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to death and dying. Delaney teaches classes and gives presentations about death, dying, and grief. Please reach out if you need a professional death educator.
Death in modern times has become a medical event to be feared and fought at all costs. An End of Life Doula understands that death is an unavoidable final transition for every living being. End-of-Life Doulas are trained to be calm, peaceful, and prepared to educate patients and their families about what to expect and how to still have choice, control, and dignity to allow for a sacred space to surround death.
